Total Yoga Therapy: Tune-up for Shoulders, Mid-Back and Neck with Linda Meacci, E-RYT, and Jamie DeMarco, DPT

  • Schoolhouse Yoga - East Liberty Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The shoulder girdle is the most mobile joint system in the body and thus is prone to overuse, tension, stiffness and injury. Without good mobility and strength in this system, we tend to slouch, lose strength and can suffer cyclical pain in the shoulders, mid-back, neck or wrists.

In this therapeutic workshop, Linda Meacci, an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher, and Jamie DeMarco, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and yoga teacher, help you understand how to restore and maintain stability and pain-free movement.

Postural issues are some of the leading causes of poor shoulder girdle function. Physiological factors involved include the skeletal structure, muscles and soft tissue of the upper back, chest, shoulders and arms. Linda and Jamie show you how to rebalance the system from both a yoga and physical therapy point of view. They will address underlying issues—including the relationship between the shoulders, hips and spine—and give you practical tools to release physical and emotional tension.

By identifying the muscle chains that stabilize the shoulders and becoming aware of simple movement that support the system, we can achieve a more upright posture and better function.

This workshop is ideal for fellow yoga teachers, long-time yogis, new students and anyone plagued with shoulder, upper back or neck tension.

This workshop qualifies for Yoga Alliance continuing education (CE) hours.

Cost: $50

Balancing Effort and Ease in Asana: A "Total Yoga Therapy" Workshop

Balancing Effort and Ease in Asana: A "Total Yoga Therapy" Workshop

The sutra “Sthira sukham asanam” (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2.46–2.48) is translated “The pose should be steady and comfortable.” This sutra provides the framework for this workshop.

We will embody steadiness (or stability), achieved through natural alignment and effort, and comfort (or ease), achieved through breath and relaxation. The student will come away with a deeper sense of harmony and freedom and be inspired to view asana from a whole new perspective. We will explore somatic movements that are encoded in our DNA, and then layer these therapeutic movements onto an asana practice. A well-balanced yoga sequence will illustrate the principle, “Sthira sukham asanam.”

Linda’s extensive experience teaching therapeutic yoga and studying various movement therapies, including experimental movement, the Feldenkrais Method and the Alexander Technique, provides unique perspective for this workshop.

All levels welcome. This workshop qualifies for Yoga Alliance CE hours.

Your Blueprint for Alignment: A "Total Yoga Therapy" Workshop

  • Shanti Yoga Studio (Chicago, IL) (map)

“Our bones are the framework of support for our bodies, much like wall studs and beams in a house. Yet the alignment of the skeleton along the vertical axis of gravity is largely overlooked today even by fitness experts and yoga teachers.” – Kathleen Porter, “Natural Posture for Pain-Free Living”

This workshop explores the mechanics of a stable, upright, natural posture while seated, standing and moving and provides a blueprint for alignment that can help alleviate recurring discomfort and pain in the neck, back, hips and shoulders. Proper alignment also promotes better brain function and circulation, as well as a more balanced nervous system. Many of us, including yoga teachers, fitness gurus and physical therapists, do not have accurate information about, or we overlook the importance of, naturally good posture and the stability it brings to our lives.

In this workshop, we will experiment with yoga postures and non-traditional movement sequences to lead us to a better understanding of our own alignment roadmap. We will also discuss common misconceptions about proper posture.

This workshop is highly recommended for yoga teachers and students, physical therapists, personal trainers and anyone who wants to address neck, back, hip and shoulder issues. This workshop qualifies for Yoga Alliance CE hours.

To register, please visit the Shanti Yoga Studio website.

Ahimsa: An Introduction to Trauma-Informed Yoga Instruction with Linda Meacci and Paula Soto

  • Schoolhouse Yoga - East Liberty Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As yoga instructors, we encounter a wide variety of students. While we are not necessarily called upon to treat trauma in our classes, we must recognize that many people will seek remedy for their trauma symptoms with yoga and that yoga, when taught in a trauma-informed manner, is proven to help alleviate the effects of trauma. Thus, to practice ahimsa (non-harming) in our teaching, we must learn to recognize the signs of trauma in our students and create a safe learning experience that respects our most vulnerable students.

In this introductory training, Linda Meacci, E-RYT, and Paula Soto, a licensed social worker, will teach you to recognize signs of traumatic stress in your students and will introduce tools for skillful response. This training presents the basics necessary to create a non-harming atmosphere; subsequent weekend trainings will equip you to address trauma and other therapeutic issues skillfully in your class and private sessions.

This workshop is for therapists and yoga instructors of all levels. Continuing education credits are earned upon completion.

Cost: $45

Total Yoga Therapy for a Healthy Back with Linda Meacci, E-RYT

SHANTI YOGA STUDIO
7646 W Touhy Ave
Chicago, IL 60631

1st Session [11:30am-2:00pm]:
Lower Back (Sacral and Lumbar) and Hips
2nd Session [3:00pm-5:00pm]:
Upper Back (Thoracic and Cervical) and Shoulder Girdle

In these exploratory workshop sessions, Linda presents various forms of movement and yoga therapy for the back.

Most back pain is a symptom of conditions developed over time. It can be caused by overuse injuries, lack of movement, accident trauma, poor posture, prolonged sitting, or emotional and mental stress. The antidote? Targeted, therapeutic movement, with a focus on alignment. Targeted movement increases blood flow to soft tissue, muscles and joints; restores stability and strength; works in an optimal range of motion to restore flexibility; balances the nervous system; promotes healing; and helps prevent future injury.
